Your Retirement Business

Business Owner

You have put in your time and come to the point that you are looking to slow down, take a step back from your professional life and dive into retirement. Even if you have the resources to retire without the need for an income from a job, how many times can you play a round of golf in a year before it gets old? Maybe starting your own business in retirement gives you the best of both worlds!

If you have had a rewarding career and saved diligently for this time in your life, you may have the opportunity to have a nest egg to live off, however other than your grand children, spouse and hobbies, you know that you will need the purpose and challenges often found in the business world to keep your mind active and not distracted. Being in the position that you are, allows you to call the shots and as Frank Sinatra said, “Do it your way”!

Retirement may be the best time of your life to start your small business. Not every business has the same demands from a time perspective, but being in a position where income is not needed to pay the bills, you have all the time you are willing to invest into something new. Although you are a seasoned professional, it is wise to consult with small business consultants, many of them have earned their stripes in the trenches of building small businesses.

Here are some business ideas to start your retirement business:

1. Consulting – You have seen the operations and “behind the scenes” of a business. There are many younger professionals that can benefit from your knowledge, skills and experience. Bring your expertise in a specific function to a small business that may lack the very expertise that you have mastered through your career

2. Restaurant – Running a restaurant is definitely a very time consuming business, but with the social aspect, you can spend time with your patrons, building long term customers while allowing someone else to step in and operate the business while you head out on your vacation.

3. E-Commerce – Opening an online store allows you to be in front of your customers all day every day, even while you are on a cruise or out of the country. With many fulfillment options, you can outsource the packaging and shipping activities alleviating the need to run a fixed schedule.

4. Hobby turned Business – It has been your hobby for many years, allowing you to relax and unwind from the stresses of the world. Over the many years of perfecting your hobby, you now have the expertise to charge for your skills and services.

Retirement may have been the end of your first career, however it does not mean that you have come to the end of your life’s road. With the advancement of medicine, the average person will live a high quality life for another 25-30 years after retirement. You may want to enjoy the fruits of your labor, but investing your time and efforts into a small business can create a legacy for generations to come.
