“Grey-Cation” Bookings Take Off This Summer

More grandparents will join their families for the much-anticipated holiday in the sun this year, according to a leading travel company.

Sun-hat Villas & Resorts has reported a 17% year-on-year increase in the number of bookings for multi-generational holidays – known as ‘grey-cations’. In March, the average booking size jumped by 22 per cent on the previous year, while in April it rose by 29 per cent.

“During the recession years we saw a rise in ‘gramping’, where grandparents would go on family camping trips, however increasing numbers are now choosing to go abroad,” explains Peter Jenkins, managing director of Sun-hat Villas & Resorts.

“This is not necessarily because they have more disposable income though. In fact, our data shows that the majority of grandparents are stumping up the entire cost, perhaps aware that many household budgets remain tight or simply because they want to help their families.

“Couples with young children may invite one or both sets of parents along, not just to relax with them but also so they can take it in turns to cook and entertain the little ones. As the grandparents get older, it tends to be more about treating them to a holiday, while spending quality time together.”

Julie, from Cheshire, regularly goes on holiday to Portugal with her husband John, son James (17) and 90-year-old father, Harry.

“We love going to Portugal because there is something for all of us,” she explained.

“Spending time together is important, so we’ll often have barbecue lunches at the villa and then go for dinner at a restaurant in the evening. The town where we stay is very safe, which means our son can go out on his own and as everything is nearby, it’s easy for Dad to get around. The locals are all incredibly friendly and we’ll often use the taxi services to make life easier.”

Overall, Sun-hat Villas & Resorts has seen a 13 per cent year-on-year rise in bookings. In March, they increased by 34 per cent for the same period compared to last year and a staggering 46 per cent in April. Portugal is the top destination for holidaymakers, closely followed by the Canary and Balearic Islands.
