Firefall – Horsetail Falls in Yosemite National Park – Late February and Early March

Firefall poem

By Susan Schaad –

An unplanned trip to the mountains with friends
An unfinished book conveys a treasure
An unlikely adventure inspite of weather
A heartfelt cry to keep pressing on
A friend to encourage (and help install snow chains!)
A trek through snow warmed by expectation
Attentions are set on the 2,000 ft waterfall
And then, waiting and wondering “will it be?”
A natural phenomena that occurs so rarely
A spectacular sight easily quenched by a cloud
Amidst blustering, snowy mist, a waterfall gleams.
An ominous shadow threatens along the giant slab of granite
At last, color bursts forth. Purple floods the rocky canvas
A silver stream spits glints of gold into the sunlight
An interplay of shadow, sun and water frenzies into a spectacle of splendor

Amazing magentas, golds, oranges and purples framed by a periwinkle sky
All the while, we sing praises to our glorious creator
And even the self-proclaimed atheist sings along
As my heart swells with intercession, I cry out “Let the fire fall!” (words of old)
As the lava-like light fades, one photographer shouts “Do it again, Daddy!”
Indeed!
