Feeling (and Looking) Fabulous at Over 50+

By on February 1, 2016

L’Armoire boutique in New Canaan, Connecticut has been selling incredible couture for 30 years, so we spoke to Owner, Diane Roth who is in her early sixties and asked the secrets to her success.

You’ve been in your New Canaan location for 30 years. Any advice to business owners?

“Steely hard work, determination, and moderate insanity. Seriously, in fashion, you have to evolve, observe the trends, nurture new talent and have talented staff. We greet our clientele affectionately and apply the same high level of service – whether they are buying a $50 item – to whatever their hearts desire. My clients are between 25 – 95 years old and we empower them to make a lasting impression by looking great, not by being a fashion victim. Being honest builds trust and loyalty.

What advice would you give to over 50’s ladies?

It’s about what works for you at whatever point you are at in your life, not the price tag. I work with ladies, regardless of shape and age, and when they leave looking and feeling confident, I believe anything is possible for them. We live in such a visual world one must remember our first impression is a ‘visual’ one. Don’t over-style or overthink outfits. We have dressed people for job interviews, promotions, weddings, Christenings, Bah Mitzvah, and high school graduations. I still get asked to dress people for the Oscars and other award ceremonies.

How do you stay in good shape?

I get up daily at 5 am to ride my horse. My one vacation of the year is to take a week off and drive up to Quebec with my Mother, where we go fly fishing for North Atlantic salmon. I also have a penchant for fast cars, driving up to Lime Rock Park regularly in my red Porsche Cayman S to participate in track days. It all helps me unwind. Do something that pushes you out of your comfort zone a little – even if it’s small.

What style tips would you give for holiday travel?

I have packed a carry on case for a client for a 3-week business trip, which included her award presentation, safari, several cocktail parties, black-tie dinners, sightseeing, and extensive travel in between. My tips for packing are:

  • What to bring on the plane: Bring a soft bag plus a backpack. Keep your purse in the backpack.
  • What to wear on the plane: Layer your jackets and your clothes to save space.
  • How to pack the bag: Pack your bag puzzle style — clothes won’t get wrinkled!

What do we have in store for you?

Hosting monthly events, philanthropic pursuits, plus I have a great relationship with New York-based designers such as Christian Siriano, Maggie Norris, and Cynthia Rose so expect some dazzling trunk shows.

L’Armoire (French for wardrobe) is located opposite New Canaan Railroad Station, chosen deliberately to accommodate Diane’s loyal New York and Fairfield clientele. The store is filled with exclusive American and European designer collections, and estate jewelry with prices ranging from $50 – $50,000+.

L’Armoire currently has a SALE on where you can pick up fantastic designer items.
