Daily Devotional – Worship Sweeter Than Incense

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional scripture today is Exodus 30: 34-38. God gave Aaron a recipe to create a sweet-smelling incense for the tabernacle. God wanted a unique, holy scent to fill His temple and attract His presence.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Take fragrant spices—gum resin, onycha and galbanum—and pure frankincense, all in equal amounts, 35 and make a fragrant blend of incense, the work of a perfumer. It is to be salted and pure and sacred. 36 Grind some of it to powder and place it in front of the ark of the covenant law in the tent of meeting, where I will meet with you. It shall be most holy to you. 37 Do not make any incense with this formula for yourselves; consider it holy to the Lord. 38 Whoever makes incense like it to enjoy its fragrance must be cut off from their people.”

Incense like our worship is to fill God’s courts. The pleasing scent brings Him joy just as our worship and praise does. As sweet as the scent of incense was, it was never really what God wanted. To God, there is nothing more pleasing than a completely abandoned and truthful heart worshipping Him.

fall scents for your home

The temple from the old testament was speaking to what was to come. The altar of burnt offerings spoke to the cross. The altar of burning incense spoke to the waves of angels and people praising and worshipping God. Like the waves hit the shore, so is the worship desired by God to be never-ending.

The only source and the reason for our existence is God. He created us for Him! For relationship and communion. God longs for our time in the garden as He intended at creation. Find some time today to draw away just the 2 of you. Have the time together and worship Him for who He is!

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

I thank You that You desire not only my worship but my presence. I come before You today humbly to bring You my all. You are worthy and deserving of so much more, but all that I have I bring to You as my sacrifice. May my worship be sweeter to You today than any incense burning.

In Jesus name
Amen
