Daily Devotional – The 8th Day of Christ-mas

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Matthew 2:13-18. So often people that speak or take aggressive actions do so out of a heart of envy. Herod displayed his envy and lack of self-confidence for all, seeking to kill every male buy under the age of 2.

“When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[c]

16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:

18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
    weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children
    and refusing to be comforted,
    because they are no more.”

Beware of the rash actions and decisions made.

Consider how Herod’s decree for every boy under 2 to be murdered changed Israel. Not only would there have been a chunk of the generation missing, but consider how the audacious power-wielding king was perceived?

Herod killed thousands of boys to try and eliminate his competition. What have we done or continue to do to intervene in God’s plan? Take hope in the fact that Herod was not successful in his attempts to thwart those plans of God.

Let us take hope this Christmas season from the evidence that our Father God is in control. No matter how we try and secure our future, or how others try to derail God’s plans, God will have His way!

Let’s Pray

Dear Father,

Thank you that You alone rule and reign. You’re in control and work everything together according to Your plans and purposes. I submit my efforts and strength to You and Yours knowing that You are more than able!

In Your Name,
