Daily Devotional – The Proof That We Are His

daily edvotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from John 13:31-37. Words can be so hollow and meaningless. So many people swear that they speak the truth, swearing by their mother’s life and even God. What truly counts is the actions that follow up the words.

“When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him,[c] God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.

33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.

34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”

Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

What do your actions testify to?

Jesus has instructed us to love each other in the same manner that He has loved us. How can we be sure of His love for us, well He lowered Himself from heaven to become flesh and die. Jesus acted and His actions have demonstrated His great love for us.

Love is a verb, one of my favorite DC Talk songs, speaks to the fact that love is something that is actioned, and acted out. Words are easy and empty if we are not willing or able to follow the words with action. If Jesus demonstrated His love for us through His death on the cross, would you be willing to die for me?

In the recent history of Christianity, many people have created a large following speaking to the blessings and personal benefits of following Jesus. I do not doubt that our Father blesses us, and He is the provider of all, but Jesus spoke to us about loving each other as more important. Let us follow His instructions and love those around us, sacrificing our comforts at least for others.

Let’s Pray

Dear Jesus,

Thank You that You have demonstrated Your love for all of humanity by dying on the cross for us. I consider Your blessings nothing in comparison to be obedient to You. I lay aside blessings for the opportunity to love others as You have loved me.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
