3 Ways to Be There for Your Grandkids

Grandparents have a very special role in a child’s life. They are often the ones who are a source of fun, they shower the grandkids with unconditional love, they are always thrilled to spend time with the kids, and they don’t have to be the ones setting the tough rules – that’s the parents’ job. As a grandparent though, sometimes it can start to feel like you are disconnected from the grandkids, and as though your bond isn’t quite as strong as you’d like it to be. The good news is that you can change this, and you can show your grandkids that you are always there for them.

For grandparents looking to play a more active role in the grandkids’ lives, here’s a look at three ways you can be there for them.

Connect On a Regular Basis

The very first tip for grandparents who want to show they are there for the grandkids is to connect with them on a regular basis. If you live near one another, this can be relatively simple, but if you don’t, there are other ways you can connect. Phone calls are always great but, nowadays, one of the best ways to connect with grandkids is to appeal to their digital side and have a video chat.

With a video chat, you have the opportunity to be much more engaged as you can see each other, they can show you things in the house, and maybe show you some school work they have done, and you can see just how much they are growing. Maybe you can schedule a weekly video chat so that the kids learn to depend on you, and know you will be there on a consistent basis.

Take an Interest in the Hobbies They Feel Passionate About

Another great tip is to start showing an interest in the hobbies your grandkids feel passionate about. Sports are a great example, as many kids enjoy playing sports and even being on a local sports team/league. Grandparents can of course show up at the games to cheer their grandchild on, but it goes deeper than that, as you can be more than just a spectator.

Taking it a step further can include taking a more active role in the sport they love. Let’s say they love baseball and they are on a team. You can take the extra step and be the one shopping for their baseball and softball supplies, practicing with them out in the yard, and even taking them to a professional baseball game. These are all excellent opportunities for bonding, and it shows you care about their interests.

Schedule One-On-One Bonding Opportunities

If you’re a grandparent with a bunch of grandkids, having everyone all together at once is obviously a great time and creates fabulous memories. However, that doesn’t mean that the one-on-one activities aren’t equally important. Having those moments allows you to really listen to your grandchild, be in the moment, and show how much you care about them. It’s all about taking an active role in their life.

You can also step into the role of babysitter whenever possible, as this helps the parents out, but it also gives you the perfect bonding opportunity. Let’s face it, the grandkids would probably much rather spend time with grandma and grandpa than a regular babysitter.

Each of these tips can act as a wonderful way for grandparents to become closer with the grandkids, show them how much they are loved, and show them that you will be there for them no matter what.
