Daily Devotional – Miracles of the New Testament 3

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from John 2:1-10. The first miracle of Jesus was not earth-shattering or one that would greatly impact the trajectory of one’s life. Rather it was one of pleasure and little consequence.

“On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

“Woman,[a] why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[b]

Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

The best is yet to come!

We are often known by the first things that we do. We create a reputation based on the first great thing that we are known for. Many athletes sweat in the shadows for years before they suddenly stand out. The years of preparation are forgotten by those around, but they never forget that first day that they rose to the top.

I have to wonder why Jesus would allow that His first miracle recorded would be of Him serving wine at a wedding. I do not wish to speculate as to why He did, but I guess that God used it to reveal how much He values time just spent with His creation.

So often we are consumed and distracted by life and all that worries us. Our Father wants us to just be and enjoy an uncomplicated life. Let us, therefore, be consumed by the presence of God rather than the source of life’s problems today.

Let’s Pray

Dear Father,

Thank you that You have created me for the purpose of being in the presence and courts of the ALmighty. Like a child, I reach out for You to take hold of me and keep me close in Your embrace.

In Jesus’s Name,
