Daily Devotional – Joseph Was Loyal and Wise

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Matthew 2: 13 -18. We sometimes forget that Joseph was part of the picture. He loyally supported Mary and Jesus from the shadows. Scripture doesn’t share much about Joseph other than he was in the lineage from King David.

When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[c]

16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:

18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
    weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children
    and refusing to be comforted,
    because they are no more.”[d]

Joseph can but only have received many stern words from parents, religious leaders, and community leaders. Why would he stand the ridicule from all the others for a woman that brought judgment upon herself and them combined?

Perhaps getting out of Nazareth was what Joseph needed. He faithfully took Mary to Bethlehem for the census, placing her on the donkey and leading the way. With no one else around, Joseph would have been the one to deliver Jesus. As the earthly father of Jesus, he would have looked at Him with grateful eyes. Grateful that the redeemer and savior of the world had been born safely and healthy.

How do we see Joseph in the nativity scene? How do we see Joseph’s role in our own lives? Do you stand loyally by your family this time of the year, no matter the insults and accusations that are thrown your way? Trust God for His divine grace and provision!

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, God, for the example of loyalty that Joseph demonstrated. Give me Your strength God as I devotedly stand with and for my family. Give us Your peace and patience as we wait for Your deliverance!

In Jesus name
Amen
