1. Set Achievable Goals 

Having something to work towards and look forward to is a great way to keep the motivation alive. As a diabetic, you must manage your diet, weight, exercise, and blood sugar levels. If you have daunting targets for any of these different areas of your life, they might feel unachievable. This puts motivation at an all-time low and doesn’t warrant much excitement about life. 

Instead, try to set small goals that are realistic and achievable. Make sure they meet the SMART goal standards:  specificity, measurability, achievability, realism, and timeliness. 

For example, perhaps you set a goal to get your weight under control. The goal could look like this: I will aim to lose ten pounds this quarter by walking a mile each morning and enjoying an aerobic workout class three times a week.

2. Watch Your Thought and Language Patterns 

What you think and what you say can have a big effect on your daily life. Try to notice thought patterns or phrases of speech that are framed negatively. When you notice them, try to re-frame them in a more positive light that puts you in control of the situation.

Instead of saying that you have not met your goal, tell yourself that you will continue to improve over time. Instead of saying that your medication regimen is frustrating you, say that you will try to seek joy in the small things like taking your daily medication. 

While these might seem like silly things to tell yourself, the power of the brain is something serious. Simply correcting these habits can be the start to setting big changes in motion. With these small steps, your attitude will slowly start to turn around.

3. Find Joy in Healthy Food and Body 

Many people dread the thought of the gym or eating salad regularly. Instead of focusing on what you don’t like about these things, challenge yourself to find what you do like about them. 

Hate your workout clothes and feel embarrassed in front of so many people at the gym? Treat yourself to a new set of sweats and specialty shoes made for diabetics so that exercising makes you feel comfortable and good about yourself. 

Struggling with saying goodbye to your favorite late-night sweets? Spend more time eating your dinner and try to savor each bite and really enjoy the food. You’ll notice that you’ll feel fuller when you take the time to indulge in dinner. You won’t even be craving that bedtime chocolate.

Did you know that stress can actually affect your level of blood sugar? When you’re stressed out, your blood sugar levels can spike. 

Living anxiously or with constant stressors in your life will only make managing your diabetes harder. Finding ways to reduce and manage your stress as much as possible can help create an easier diabetic lifestyle, as you won’t have to work so hard at leveling out your blood sugar.

While exercise is a great way to combat stress and anxiety, it doesn’t work for everyone. If you’re already exercising weekly and eating well, look into therapy or a new kind of energy releases like yoga or creative writing. Anything that actively relaxes you can count as a stress management tool, even if it’s just time spent meditating or lounging on the couch.
