Women Over 50 With Over-Styled Hair

over-styled

It may seem like a good idea for women over 50 to use a flat iron or curling iron daily to achieve an amazing hairstyle. This practice can severely damage your hair causing the strands to break. Many women over 50 are unaware of just how harmful these styling tools can be when not using them properly.

How do we keep our over-styled hair looking healthy?

Yvonne Church, the senior stylist at Yvonnes Hair Studio in South Florida, shares how to keep hair looking healthy even when we go too heavy on the styling tools:

Start with a Good Shampoo

Not all shampoo and conditioners are created equal. Investing in a good shampoo and conditioner can make a huge difference in keeping your hair healthy. I really like the Aroma Women’s Customized Shampoo and conditioner. Both of these lines are All-Natural, high-quality products, and offer you the opportunity to scent the shampoo and conditioner with your own personal choice.

Protect Your Hair Against the Heat

In order to create great-looking hairstyles we need to use styling tools. Using a good heat protectant product can reduce the damage that styling tools can often create. I use Shu Uemura heat serums and creams (one for fine hair and one for thicker hair). These keep the hair protected from the intense heat and leave your hair looking shiny.

Turn Down The Heat

Even though using high heat on a styling tool can speed up the styling process, it can often lead to unnecessary hair damage. Even if your styling tool goes up to 500 degrees, there is never a reason to use the highest setting on your styling tools. Using a medium heat (around 250-375 degrees) is enough heat without creating major hair damage.

Mask Your Locks

I love making hair masks! They are an easy and cost-effective way to lock moisture into your hair to keep it healthy.  A great mask for normal to dry hair is using one teaspoon of olive oil, two, teaspoons of vinegar and one egg mixed together. Leave it on your hair for twenty minutes before shampooing (be sure to shampoo your hair twice after applying the mask). This will give your hair a nice sheen and it will also help it grow.

What You Put In Your Body Shows On the Outside

Whatever you put into your body reflects your outsides. Take care of your insides by staying hydrated and eating foods full of nutrients such as fish, nuts and eggs. Your hair will look less damaged and shiny.  I also recommend taking a daily biotin supplement all year. Biotin is a natural supplement that many people don’t get enough of and that could be a contributing factor to dry, brittle hair.

As a woman over 50, your hair goes through alot, we hope that these tips will help your hair shine and radiate.
