What’s in the Cloud’s?

If you like most adults have watched any TV in the last couple years, you will have seen hundreds of ads telling you about the various Cloud computing solutions for businesses. They go on to speak about how great Cloud computing is, but what exactly is Cloud computing?

To understand what Cloud computing is, you first need to know what it is replacing. All Computer programs that you use are software that need to be stored on hardware (Physical Machines). Companies that needed information and programs to run their operations would create and operate servers, just really big hard drives, to store all the data in one location rather on each individual employees computer. The data and files needed to perform the job were stored on these servers. There was security in this, allowing controlled access to required documents by different employees.

Servers came at a very high cost! Companies needed to invest a lot of money into the hardware, while running the risk of running out of storage space. This meant that servers were created with too much storage, and with upgrades in technology the memory for storage kept getting better. Although better, may not have been compatible with previous systems which then required a complete upgrade of all the equipment. This all cost a lot of money!

So in stepped the Cloud! It came with solutions to all the challenges facing the server generation. Companies and individuals have been able to “lease” storage space at an offsite location, the Cloud. In the Cloud computing solutions, you can now rent from as little as 1 Gigabyte of storage to as much as 1 Exabyte. It all depends on your need and appetite. You can increase or lower your leased amount of storage by the flick of a switch.

One of the major benefits of the Cloud is that you have access to your files from all over the world on your cell phone, laptop or tablet. You can download or upload files. You have seen solutions like Dropbox and OneDrive come along with personal or small business solutions. They tend to offer small amounts of storage, enticing you to join the cloud only to have you reach your cap and start charging you for your storage. They always have your files and as you grow ever more dependent on their services, you soon no longer can live without their storage.

What if you could have the best of both worlds, control under your own system, yet the ease and user friendly options of a Cloud? Here are  few different options that you can consider where you have your own Cloud!
