What is DHEA? Why and How to use it

DHEA

DHEA, is an acronym for dehydroepiandrosterone; a naturally occurring pro-hormone produced by the adrenal glands, gonads and the skin – the dermis. DHEA is a base building block for hormones like testosterone and estrogen and about 50 other hormones. DHEA is the most abundant prohormone in the body.

Hormones drive our energy, mood, muscle tone, fat, quality of sleep, mental sharpness, sex drive, and more.

What happens to DHEA over the course of human life?

Humans produce more and more DHEA from birth through puberty to adulthood, when we are in our reproductive prime as humans.  But after about age 25 males and females alike make about 2% less each year for the rest of our lives.

So, if DHEA levels are a base for hormones, and DHEA levels decline steadily after age 25 at a rate of 2% per year, by age 35 people make about 20% less than they did at age 25, when at their best, or at their prime. By age 50 people make only half as much.

Why does this matter? What are some things DHEA does?

Men and women notice the gradual declines in hormones in many small subtle declines after about age 35. These changes are hormone-driven. Some very common changes noticed by both men and women as hormone levels decline are:

  • Do not sleep well at night, toss and turn wake up several times during the night
  • lack energy and just feel washed out; blah; no zest or vitality
  • become more susceptible to infections: get sick more often with colds and the flu
  • lose physical fitness and muscle tone and find it becomes easier and easier to add fat.  That extra pad around the middle gets easier and easier to add and harder and harder to make go away
  • notice a loss of focus and mental sharpness
  • lack of interest in sex
  • thin papery skin, more age spots, and wrinkles

People generally don’t feel their best anymore – no zest, low vitality, low drive.

How should DHEA be used? Why?

DHEA should be used as a bioidentical cream applied to thin vascular skin each day instead of an oral tablet or pill.  People wonder how a cream applied on the skin can actually make you feel better?

The skin, or dermis, is the largest organ of the human body and is where many biological processes occur. Most DHEA processing actually occurs in the skin, the dermis, all the time anyway.

Twist 25 DHEA cream is made with bioidentical DHEA in a special cream that puts what the body uses naturally, where the body uses it.  One full pump press of Twist 25 cream contains 20 MG bioidentical DHEA.

DHEA is best used as a bioidentical cream applied on thin hairless skin.

Not a pill

Why do DHEA pills not work?

When DHEA is taken as a pill, most DHEA is destroyed by the liver and only ends up providing DHEA-Sulfate, not free DHEA.  Free DHEA is what the body uses to make it into hormones.  These hormones are what yield the noticeable benefits people feel.  The reason is DHEA is a base for the sex hormones. DHEA-S, though a good thing, does not provide a noticeable benefit.

This was shown by Dr. Hammer and a team of physicians in a medical research study entitled “No evidence for Hepatic Conversion of DHEA-S to DHEA: In Vivo and In Vitro Studies” The title says it all.  That means that DHEA-S (what you get when you take an oral supplement) cannot be converted by the body into free DHEA which is what the body uses as a base for all of the hormones that make you feel better, proving the noticeable benefits people 35 and up can see and feel.

  1. It’s good that you point out that DHEA cream can benefit people who suffer from low sex drive. I have a very low sex drive lately, so I’m considering trying DHEA to improve my relationship with my wife. I’m going to look for a good company that can sell me some DHEA cream.
