Why Protein Shakes Are a Healthy Breakfast

By on July 2, 2012

Almost every morning I drink a protein shake for breakfast, with whatever fruit is in season.

Right now, every morning, we head out to our strawberry patch and pick berries. Lots of berries.

One thing I wish we had done differently in our patch was to make rows where we could walk. But with limited area, we wanted to get the best use of our space.

I did, however, put our old cooler right in the middle of the bed, so I’d have a place to sit and pick around me.

It works!

Since it’s National “Vanilla” Milkshake Day today (who comes up with these dates and celebrations?) I thought I’d share my healthy vanilla strawberry “shake” recipe with you, using fresh Coughlin strawberries and vanilla whey protein powder.

Here’s a little info I found on the web. And actually, I’ll link to the entire site. Good information!

Whey protein is a particularly good source of protein because it’s pure, clean, and one of the most easily absorbed sources of protein there is. In fact, whey protein has the highest biological value (a measure of nitrogen retained for growth or maintenance) of any protein.

Whey protein comes from milk (it comes out during the cheese manufacturing process) and is put through a process that separates out the pure amino acids (all 8 essential amino acids and branched-chain amino acids) and leaves behind the sugar (lactose), fat and cholesterol. No wonder that healthy Miss Muffet is always eating her curds and whey!

Happy National Vanilla Milkshake Day!

What’s your typical morning breakfast, and do you make sure and include protein?
