Plan Thanksgiving Amid the Covid Crisis

Plan Thanksgiving Amid Covid

Life is not the same. We have been learning to live a “new normal” through this pandemic. How does a person plan Thanksgiving amid the Covid crisis? Even Black Friday traditions will not be the same. Many big retail stores such as Walmart and Target announced that they would not be opening their brick and mortar stores for Black Friday shopping

Travel

Family and friends usually travel to be together over Thanksgiving. What does that look like this year? Perhaps one should consider a longer road trip if you’re uncomfortable with flying. There are precautions to take if you’re planning to fly or travel a long distance. Most states, counties, and places all require a face mask. Consider a mask that you can change out the filter regularly and adjust airflow as well. Wear disposable gloves that can be changed and discarded easily. Be sure to wipe down surfaces with disinfecting wipes, such as the tray, seat belt, remote control, arm rest etc. (Our family has done this for years… long before COVID and I’ve always  felt more comfortable traveling by doing so).

Lodging

It might be a tight squeeze, but your family and friends may feel more comfortable lodging in a family member’s home. Knowing that your loved ones who have traveled may have been exposed to COVID (& other viruses), consider changing out your air filter before and/or after their stay. Hotels expect guests to be a little more cautious. Make the request for air filters to be changed. Wipe down surfaces with disinfecting wipes.

Food & Preparation

Try to prepare as much food as possible ahead of time. Preparation will help you feel less stressed on the day but also allows you to do extra cleaning and sanitizing. Plan a healthy Thanksgiving menu. Eating a healthier Thanksgiving meal is beneficial too!

Family & Friends

No one could have prepared us for this year. You can only plan Thanksgiving amid Covid with the information you have and what you are comfortable with. If you are worried about your risk, or the risk of loved ones, ask your loved ones to be considerate and quarantine if they have been exposed.

Thanksgiving might not look the same this year. But, this crisis will pass. Next year will be a new year with new hope. Let’s get through this together and be sure of a tomorrow!
