Modern Country: Interiors for Contemporary Country Living

By Caroline Clifton-Mogg –

Until well into the nineteenth century, most of mainland Europe was predominantly a rural country, and the roots of most people were those of the countryside. The geological and natural landscapes that people knew and grew up with were those of woods and pastures, mountains and hills, rivers and lakes. There was a tradition of how life was conducted, and this sense of tradition, even in our speeded-up technological era, is as strong as it always was.

So a modern country style, although emphatically of the twenty-first century, is still based on, and evolved from, that rural tradition, even when that tradition is brought bang up to date. Lightness of living is important – an understanding of the things that make life pleasant, such as family and friends, comfort and ease, food and drink. The houses in Modern Country reflect these desires and concerns, and throughout the book we can see the inventive and imaginative ideas and solutions that home owners have employed to make their home, large or small, worth living in, whether they have used professional help or gone it alone.

Whether they are reaching back into the past, standing firmly in the present or looking forwards into the future, and whichever design and architectural route has been taken, one thread that runs through each and every one of these homes is the desire to create a place to live in that is firmly entrenched in the greater countryside.
