Make Fifty a Bit More Fabulous

By Millie Rainer−

Women are like fine wine. They only get better with age. Beauty is limitless and ageless, which means it has nothing to do with how old or young you are. Of course, there are several changes in the way women look with every passing year, but that does not mean that they lose their beauty and charm as they grow older.

Most women look great even as they mature. That may have something to do with the fact that women love taking care of themselves and put in great efforts in maintaining their looks and fitness. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with trying to look youthful. In fact, it is a great thing to be able to take years off your appearance.

It’s no secret that women use makeup to enhance their natural beauty. It is considered a much better and safer option to Botox and cosmetic surgery. There are, however, several tricks that can be employed in order to apply it correctly. With the right makeup tricks, women can transform their appearance and look years younger.

Mentioned ahead are certain makeup dos and don’ts for mature women.

Do

1. Moisturize Your Skin a Lot

Because skin starts to become dry as we age, there’s a certain level of moisture that needs to be locked into the skin to make it appear youthful. Look for ways to add more moisture in your daily skin care regimen. Banish the harsh cleansing gels and soap bars and switch to cleansing milk instead as that is easier on your skin and also more hydrating. Replace lotions with skin-nourishing face and under eye creams. Apply lip balm every night before you sleep to wake up with softer and more kissable lips.

2. Use Liquid Foundation

Embrace liquid foundation instead of the powder variant as it can settle into your wrinkles and make your skin look chalky and aged. It will highlight your wrinkles, which will make you look older than your age. Liquid foundations blend well into the skin and make it look smooth. Most of them also contain antioxidants. Make sure to apply evenly all over your face and neck, covering your eyelids and the under-eye area for even coverage.

3. Have Fun with Colors

Do not hesitate in adding a dash of color to your face with a blush. It can make you look fresh and youthful. You will do well in applying a cream blush in shades of pink, orange, peach, or other floral shades to the apples of your cheeks. You can use your fingertips to do this so that the color blends well with your skin. The trick to making the blush work for you is to make it seem as if there’s hardly any of it. Do make sure that your skin is well hydrated if you’re using a powder blush.

4. Maintain a Good Eyebrow Shape

Make sure that your eyebrows are shaped properly. Overarched eyebrows will make you look older. Although the arch is important, it should look gradual and gentle. And even though you may be adept at plucking your eyebrows, it is still advisable to have them shaped by a professional every once in a while.

Apart from that, do learn how to use an eyebrow pencil. Be careful about the shade you use, because the color of your eyebrows will probably fade as you age. So you may have to pick your eyebrow pencil accordingly.

5. Remove Facial Hair

Do try and get rid of the facial hair around your mouth, especially on your upper lip. And don’t forget about the chin hair. Plucking them is one solution but it may not be enough to keep them at bay permanently. Meet your dermatologist and figure out which kind of laser hair removal technique would work best to eliminate it.

1. Go Overboard with Lip Products

As you grow older, you will notice your lips becoming smaller and less plump. It is, therefore, advisable to avoid wearing matte lipsticks as they will further dry your lips and may even settle in the lines on your lips. It is better to use sheer or cream-based lipsticks in subtle shades as they will give your lips a youthful sheen. Brighter colors are better than darker ones as the latter can sometimes make the face appear harsh. You could also use gloss and a light highlighter around your lips to enhance their shape, but stay away from them if you have vertical age lines above your upper lip.

2. Apply Heavy Eyeliner

As mentioned above, applying heavy and dark makeup can age you. And although you might want to highlight your beautiful eyes, there is a proper way to do so. A lot of women line their upper eyelids heavily. They also tend to line the inside of the eye. But a heavy application of the liner and the mascara is not always needed and can in most cases be toned down. You might also want to consider switching from black eyeliner to a brown one for a softer look.

3. Use Shimmery Eye Shadow

Focus on glow, rather than shimmer and glitter as that can look unflattering on mature skin by settling into the fine lines of the skin. It is better to opt for sheer matte colors for your eyelids. To test which shade is right for you, apply the color on your wrist (and not on the back of your hand) and look at it in the sunlight. If it shimmers and sparkles, avoid it. But if it looks glow-y, pick it up.

4. Miss out on Beauty Sleep

When you sleep/rest, your skin gets the time to repair and restore itself, which makes it glow naturally with health. A lack of sleep will only make it appear lifeless and dull. Not to mention, it will also give you dark under-eye circles.

Conclusion

Looking fabulous at fifty is a just a matter of using makeup to your advantage and accentuating your natural beauty. It’s all about what works for you, and not about aping what works for your best friend or your favorite celebrity, because at the end of the day, you have to feel comfortable in your own skin.

  1. Yes! We women over 50 (and those rising) are beautiful! However, at 53, I still dig my shimmer shadows and can still wear them well. At some point, that may change…I keep an ‘eye’ on it. XXOO
