Taking a Step Towards Better Health-

By Carol Doyel –

The first step towards making a healthy change in our lives is having an awareness that we need to change, which for some people may not happen until they have a life threatening situation that requires them to make drastic changes in their diet and lifestyle.

For those who have experienced a life and death event they may be better off in the long run if they’re willing to make the significant changes necessary to improve their health status. However, for most of us who do not have this kind of a wake-up call we may experience a more gradual decline in health that can eventually lead to chronic illness.

For those who experience a more gradual decline in health, they may not find the motivation to change because they can feel overwhelmed and are more likely to give in to their bad habits. They have not experienced the benefits of making positive changes.

To improve your health status, like any change in life, it begins with taking the first step. I encourage you to take the first step by getting a physical, taking an honest look at where you are in terms of your overall health, and take time to educate yourself.

The next step to attaining better health is applying what you learn.  That may not be as easy as reading about it. LivingBetterat50.com hopes to provide you with the resources and information that can help you begin to take steps towards positive changes.

Our philosophy is that if you take small steps by making positive changes over time such as reducing your sugar intake, eating more fresh foods, adding organic foods into your diet, taking 10-15 minute breaks throughout the day to move more, starting a regular exercise routine, that you’ll begin to experience success that can lead to additional positive changes and more success.  And positive reinforcement is much more effective than beating yourself up, which can lead to giving up.

The definition of healthy may mean different things to different people but the definition that I like best is one described by the World Health Organization: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” I’m sure many of you may have experienced exceptional health only to find yourself still “unhealthy” emotionally and/or spiritually. One of my favorite verses in the Bible regarding health is in 3 John 1:2 “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.”

It’s important to take care of the emotional and spiritual person as well as the physical one!  We are multi-faceted individuals and to have a healthy balance and experience overall health we need to be sure we’re addressing the whole-self.

We hope that Livingbetterat50.com will be a source of information, education, and encouragement to help you find more balance in these multiple areas of your life.  We have put together a team of contributors and experts who we believe will provide you with the information you need to begin taking the first steps, or the next step in your journey towards better health!
