Heavenly Accessories

A recent survey shows that, in her lifetime, the average woman will spend $25,000 on shoes! Jewelry, handbags, coats, scarves and hair items are also very popular.

Men do not escape the accessory trap. Their favorites would have to include billfolds and watches as well as athletic shoes.

At one time or another, we will probably all purchase that trendy accessory for our phone, computer, and even our cars. My husband just loves his jeep and could hardly wait to update it with a St. Louis Cardinal’s wheel cover for the back door.

The dictionary defines an accessory as anything that is added to something else in order to make it more useful, versatile, or attractive.

When we choose to accept God’s gift of eternal life, we should desire to be useful and versatile in our service for Him. Our lives should attract others to the Lord by what we say and do.

So, as Christians, are there Heavenly Accessories that we can put on that will make the folks around us take a second look? Where will we find these items and how much will they cost?

Many of this world’s most popular accessories cost a pretty penny and may even be hard to find. However, God’s Holy Spirit is absolutely free to us when we receive the gift of eternal life. The Bible tells us that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Jesus paid for our sin on the cross of Calvary. He died on that cross and three days later He arose from the dead. Eventually Jesus returned to Heaven, but when He did, He made a very special promise.

“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:16,17 NKJV).

God’s Holy Spirit lives within everyone who has accepted His gift of salvation.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Galatians 5:22,23 NKJV).

Think of these lovely attributes as accessories in your Heavenly Closet.

Folks rarely see these items on display at their local Wal-Mart or Target and that is too bad. The unbelieving world should find appealing examples of all nine accessories adorning our lives wherever we go. They should see them at the post office, at school, on the golf course, at their favorite restaurant, and especially at their church.

Now that I am retired I try to remember that God still has a purpose for my life. No matter the circumstances I will face that day, I know that God is with me.

So I reach into my Heavenly Closet and put on some kindness, peace, and self-control as I head out the door to whatever He has in store for me.

Wearing outfits like these will make us extremely useful, versatile and attractive as we seek to fulfill God’s purpose for our lives.

Thank you, dear Lord, for our Heavenly Accessories!
