As much as we associate birthdays with joy, fun and frolic, that may not be the case for women preparing to celebrate their Golden Jubilee or the big “50”. It can be discouraging thinking about being on the other side of fifty. Growing beyond fifty is often associated with  hormonal imbalance,  declining sex drive, thinning hair, wrinkles, reduced muscle tone and age related ailments. Not much to look forward to.

However, you can choose to make healthier choices by eating right and getting regular exercise as well as embrace aging with the following suggestions:

1. Think Young – How we think about aging and our attitude can impact the actual aging process. Do you think young, or do you think of yourself as old? You may need to change the way you think about growing old to a more positive mindset. Read about other people who have done great things in their later years that inspire you.

2. Try New Things – Make a list of all the things you’ve wanted to do and then try doing something new every month. Be adventurous. Read books about places you’ve never visited and then plan a trip so you have something to look forward to. Half the fun is dreaming about it.

3. Invest in Yourself – Take a class, hire a coach, take up a new hobby or maybe go back to school and finish that degree.

4. Take Time to Care for Yourself – Doing small things like getting a pedicure and manicure, or getting your hair trimmed or styled regularly are important in how you feel about yourself. If you feel pretty you look pretty.

5. Get Plenty of Rest – Don’t think that just because you’re not as busy as you use to be that you don’t need as much sleep at ‘this’ age. Not true. The body needs time to repair and restore itself. Lack of sleep only accentuates your dark circles and makes your skin appear lifeless and the mind restless.

6. Pay Attention to Your Skin Care Regimen – Using the right kind of skin care products and makeup makes a difference as we age, but don’t make the mistake of over doing the makeup to hide your wrinkles and dark circles; it causes make-up to cake along the lines of your face and ages you even more.

7. Select Quality Skin Care Products – With online shopping you can read the specifications and ingredients of a product to determine if it meets your skin care needs and is a good buy or not. You can save money with online coupons like the ones at Nordstorm coupons.

8. Create a Personal 50+ Style  – Beware of hyped up celebrity styles and trends. Just because a certain hairstyle or shade of lipstick makes Meryl  Streep look younger, it may not  be a good idea for you. It’s important to find a style that is both comfortable and complimentary for you.

Taking care of yourself,  developing a personal style,  embracing new challenges with a healthy attitude, and accepting certain changes that are inevitable after 50 will help you embrace the other side of fifty – The happier side of fifty.
