Easy Ways to Boost Your Energy

By Michele Brant, PCC, ELI-MP –

Do you find yourself watching children that are full of energy and saying “I wish I had their energy”? There are ways to increase your energy besides sleep, nutritious eating, exercise and caffeine!

Here are 7 simple strategies that are backed by science for increased energy throughout the day.

1.       Take breaks – Taking a short break and doing absolutely nothing for a few minutes can help you overcome fatigue and actually get more done in the course of a day. One short break of 5 or 10 minutes or even less can boost your energy immediately, and making break time a habit can keep your energy up long-term.

2.       Meditate – Many studies have demonstrated the fatigue-fighting effects of meditation, but there’s no need to light candles, sit cross-legged, or learn a mantra. At the core is the goal to focus and eventually quiet your mind. As you progress, you will find that you can meditate anywhere and at any time, accessing an inner calm no matter what’s going on around you that leads to restored energy.

3.       Add a Power Nap to the day – Research has shown that both information overload and pushing our brains too hard can zap energy. But studies by the National Institutes of Mental Health found that a 15 to 30 minute “power nap” can not only reverse the mind-numbing effects of information overload, it may also help us to better retain what we have learned.

4.       Try Diaphragmatic Breathing – In Chinese Medicine, energy is called “qi” (pronounced “chi”), and one of the most important ways we make qi is by breathing deeply. Stress, poor posture, a snug waistline, and habit are some of the reasons why our breath doesn’t make it down to the bottom of our lungs. Diaphragmatic breathing, also known as belly breathing, is a simple way we can increase our qi energy and improve our stamina.

5.       Schedule time every day just for you – Research shows that being actively involved in recreation leaves you feeling calm, energetic, and happy. Create a daily ritual where you take 20 to 30 minutes for yourself just relaxing. Pick up a book, listen to music, or have a cup of tea. Everyone is different and you have to find what activities work best for you to relax.

6.       Play with color – Bright colors like red, orange and yellow have been shown to stimulate the nervous system. Incorporate it into your accessories such as jewelry and scarves. You can also stock your office with orange sticky notes and file folders.

7.       Create your own “happy dance” – A happy dance is a mini dance routine that occurs when something really great happens. Moving pumps oxygen throughout our bodies triggering the release of feel-good endorphins associated with more vitality. Allow yourself to feel a little silly in the moment!

Give them a try and add a few to your regular routine to be more energized!
