Death Threat

Overcoming the Enemy's Storms

Excerpt from Overcoming the Enemy’s Storms

When I in arrived at the hospital in Atlanta, Georgia from California, my daughter-in-law Kisha, was still in the last stages of labor. It was a dry birth so the baby crowned but came no further. With the medication, Kisha’s body had difficulty producing pressure to push the baby out. Around 11:00 p.m., the doctor decided to give Kisha an emergency C-section.

After waiting a long time I turned to my friend Dr. Kluane. who had driven me there straight from the airport. “My other son, Curtis’ children were both born by C-section and we heard news quicker than this.”

“They should send Carlton from the delivery room to tell us when we can see the baby.” Chuck, my ex-husband, said.

I pointed down the hall. “Here comes the doctor and Carlton is walking behind him.”

“I know you’ve waited a long time to hear about your new granddaughter,” the doctor said.

“Overall she’s a normal beautiful baby girl, but her lungs did not get the message that she is out of the womb. She’s not breathing oxygen properly, so I had to rush her to the neonatal intensive care unit. I’m sorry to have to give you this news. This happens sometimes. It’s not rare-but it is serious. Most babies make it, but some don’t. I’ll send the nurse to tell you when you can see her.”

He paused for a few seconds. “Kisha is doing fine. Ask at the nurse’s station what room she’s in.”

I looked at the clock on the wall behind me and it was 2:20 a.m. I looked at Carlton and his face looked expressionless, numb.

Dr. Kluane, Carlton, Chuck, Lilly, his wife, and I entered Kisha’s room together. She was under anesthetic and groggy, but awake. We surrounded her bed with all our faces wet with tears of concern. One by one we prayed for baby Jeana’s life, for her lungs to be healed, for her full recovery, and for her to have no residual damage to her lungs. We spoke against the death threat. We surrendered her body to the Lord and trusted God to bring her through. We surrendered her body to the Lord and trusted God to bring her through.

Immediately I remembered painting baby Jeana’s room on December 9th and the revelation I received about the word death. I reminded Carlton and Kisha about our warfare on that day and how we and took our authority over the spirit of death. They were encouraged how God through his Grace and goodness warned us in advance that there would be a death threat.

I let them know, “The process for victory has started on Jeana’s behalf. If nothing could be done to save baby Jeana from this assault against her body, then God would not have given us advanced warning. He’s a good administrator, and He wastes nothing. He spoke concerning the Enemy’s plan because we have an opportunity through the grace of God to reverse this crisis. We’ll fight the good fight of faith. Each of us will fight as God directs us. I will add fasting to my fight.”

Kisha’s parents arrived the next morning and over the next few days, we fought back grief and fear. Each of us declared the following statement several times a day: “We believe Jeana will live and not die. She’ll declare the works of the Lord. She’ll have healthy lungs.”

Two of us at a time were allowed into neonatal intensive care for twenty minutes a visit. Carlton and I went in first. Baby Jeana had a tube in her mouth, breathing for her; an intravenous feeding tube in her arm; and monitors on her head, lungs, and feet. She looked so helpless, so lifeless. Our arms ached to hold her, and our lips longed to shower her cheeks with kisses.

Carlton and I stared at Jeana for a while as our minds and emotions worked to comprehend what we saw. We clasped hands and prayed over her.

The nurse approached us and said, “We have her totally sedated because if she moves at all, she’ll use oxygen, and her body needs all the oxygen it can take in. You can’t touch her because that would cause her to move. Even in a sedated state she might naturally respond.”

Back in Kisha’s room, the doctor returned with more news. It’s been four days and she is not responding to our treatments. The ambulance will be transporting her to a special Children’s hospital within the hour. Her response to the treatments within the next four days will show us what her chances are.”

We all alternated the overnight shift at the hospital. Kisha and I depended on others to drive us because both of us were recovering from abdominal surgery.

I cried out to the Lord, “God, two months before Jeana was born You gave Kisha a dream about Jeana’s name. In the dream someone told Kisha the name of the baby and even spelled it for her, Jeana instead of Gina. The name is a derivative of the name John. The Hebrew meaning is Jehovah is gracious. You gave her a specific name because You have a specific purpose for her life. I declare and believe Jehovah will be gracious to baby Jeana!

“We refuse the threat of death. We believe she will live and not die. She will declare the works of the Lord according to Your Word in Psalm 118:17: I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.

Carlton told us he made his own covenant with the Lord that Thursday morning. “I walked around the hospital crying. Then I prayed, ‘God, I put my faith in You, and I ask for Jeana’s full recovery and that I will be able to bring her home on Saturday with no lung problems.’ I’m going to tell our doctor that everything is in God’s hands, and I’m asking God for her to come home with us on Saturday. So when she is released in good health on Saturday the doctor will know it was a miracle from God”

Thursday evening, to the doctors’ amazement, baby Jeana’s body began to respond to the treatments. Friday the doctor said she had completely recovered.

On Saturday, a healthy eight-day-old baby came home with joyful parents and grandparents. The death threat was over. Death was conquered, and the assault from the Enemy was cancelled. Since that time Jeana has never had any problems with her lungs. She is a normal active child today.

We overcame the assault from the Adversary through the wisdom of the Holy Spirit’s leading. Jeana knows her miraculous testimony and will one day share it with the world!
