Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Matthew 7:24-29. Pride is the first step towards a downfall. Arrogance believes that we know better than everyone else and only our opinion is worth considering.
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.”

Being open and listening takes courage
We all know at least one person that knows everything! No matter the conversation, the topic, or who is participating, this person will always dictate the conversation. They talk with a hollow authority, claiming to know everything about the topic. I have even been in conversations where someone like this argues with world-leading experts.
I am the first to admit that I do not know anything. I am always willing to listen and consider what others have to say. I try to have an open mind, and often question those that claim to be experts. I need them to explain it to me as though I am a 5-year old.
The difference between hearing and listening is the application of words or messages. As a person who hears, we can not stop ourselves from hearing someone, but listening takes attention and a conscientious effort. Jesus asks us to not only hear but to apply the wisdom of God in our every day.

Dear Father,
Thank you that You willing impart Your wisdom to any of us that will humble ourselves and listen. I come before You today, speak for I am doing more than hearing, I am listening so that I can do as You say.
