Daily Devotional – Wisdom, the Greatest Earthly Treasure

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Proverbs 1:1-7. Knowledge may provide you with a head full of information, wisdom teaches you how to use it. A common saying that I share with my children is “Being right isn’t always right!”

“The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

for gaining wisdom and instruction;
    for understanding words of insight;
for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
    doing what is right and just and fair;
for giving prudence to those who are simple,[a]
    knowledge and discretion to the young—
let the wise listen and add to their learning,
    and let the discerning get guidance—
for understanding proverbs and parables,
    the sayings and riddles of the wise.[b]

fall scents for your home

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
    but fools[c] despise wisdom and instruction.”

Wisdom adds compassion to knowledge

In 1 Corinthians 13: 1 “If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal“, Paul reminds us of the importance of love. While you may speak the truth, truth without the wrapping of love will cause harm.

God calls us to gain wisdom. He calls us to come to Him because He will surely give us wisdom. God understands the value of wisdom and compassion. God shows us throughout His word how the first step to gaining wisdom is a teachable spirit. When you acknowledge that you fall short in understanding, God can share wisdom with you.

Wisdom doesn’t water down the truth. Words that are spoken from experience and fueled by love aim to restore and encourage. If the objective of the correction or instruction is to criticize and belittle, the tone will most definitely lack love and wisdom!

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, Father, that you desire to give me wisdom. I know that words spoken with wisdom and love will draw men and women to You. I come before You today with an open heart and mind asking that You teach me and give me Your wisdom.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
