Daily Devotional – Wisdom Doesn’t Cause Destruction

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Proverbs 16:18-25. When you are faced with a choice, do you often select the best choice? Proverbs talk about how there are choices that seem to be correct, but these choices ultimately lead to destruction!

Pride goes before destruction,

a haughty spirit before a fall.

<

19 Better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed
than to share plunder with the proud.

20 Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers,[a]
and blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord.

21 The wise in heart are called discerning,
    and gracious words promote instruction.[b]

22 Prudence is a fountain of life to the prudent,
but folly brings punishment to fools.

23 The hearts of the wise make their mouths prudent,
    and their lips promote instruction.[c]

24 Gracious words are a honeycomb,
sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

25 There is a way that appears to be right,
but in the end it leads to death.”

What causes your destruction?

As a former professional athlete, I understand the value of confidence. Second-guessing your choices and decisions slows you down just enough for you to make errors, leading to losses. Being confident in your abilities and your choices gives you an edge over an opponent that is not that confident.

Then there is the gray area that some creep into called “overconfidence”. A few characteristics that encompass overconfidence is pride and arrogance. If you are not surrounded by people that keep you planted in reality, this is a recipe for disaster.

Wisdom is discerning. As a wise person remains open to the counsel and instruction from their trusted friends. This instruction and humility help the wise person choose ways that lead to life and not death!

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, Jesus, for surrounding me with people that care and love me. Help me to be wise and open to their words spoken in love. I want to choose life and focus my eyes on You today! Help me to choose the correct way, no matter how difficult the choice may appear.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
