Daily Devotional – Wisdom Delights in Understanding

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Proverbs 18:5-13. How important is your opinion to you and everyone around you? A wise person values understanding more than their own opinion and thoughts. A wise person listens and is open to hearing other opinions.

“It is not good to be partial to the wicked
    and so deprive the innocent of justice.

The lips of fools bring them strife,
    and their mouths invite a beating.

fall scents for your home

The mouths of fools are their undoing,
    and their lips are a snare to their very lives.

The words of a gossip are like choice morsels;
    they go down to the inmost parts.

One who is slack in his work
    is brother to one who destroys.

10 The name of the Lord is a fortified tower;
    the righteous run to it and are safe.

11 The wealth of the rich is their fortified city;
    they imagine it a wall too high to scale.

12 Before a downfall the heart is haughty,
    but humility comes before honor.

13 To answer before listening—
    that is folly and shame.”

Do you talk or listen first?

I have heard that in leadership, you should never talk first. Always allow the team to raise their concerns or what they see as a problem. Knowing that there is a conflict, a good leader with no tell-tale signs on the face wait patiently for the others to speak first.

Rather than enforcing their way and thinking on the followers, a wise leader listens. They do not listen to simply appease their followers, they listen to understand their reasoning and desires.

A fool will reveal their foolish ways and sinful desires, given the opportunity to speak. Their words will lay a snare for themselves and be their downfall in the end. Try listening more than speaking.

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, Jesus, for Your wise words and teaching. Help me by Your Holy Spirit to be patient. With Your patience, I will listen more and understand what others are saying. I will then be better positioned to respond with Your love and wisdom.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
