Daily Devotional – Truth vs Reality

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from John 18:36-39. It is often very easy to hear people’s opinions. They speak of what they see and have experienced in life as truth. They have lived a particular reality and so they speak as though this is true for all. This may, or may not be the truth, it may be their reality but not necessarily truthful.

Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”

37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

<

Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”

38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him. 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”

Do you have a correct perspective of reality?

“Truth is defined as that which corresponds to reality as perceived by God” R, C. Sproul

Pilate asked Jesus “What is truth?” Revealing his frustration with the important question that haunts us all. As a judge, Pilate, must have heard more lies than he could wish for. In the search of truth for his judgements, Pilate’s skeptism had left him to giving up on his search.

We live in a culture of relatism. We allow others to believe what they claim and live out their “own truth”. Our culture is morphing each and every day as a melting pot of diverse backgrounds and cultures. As it all mixes, there is a singular truth that overides our own personal view.

We have discussed in the past, that we only see a portion of the picture. While we can only understand and accept our experience for the testimony of truth, it does not mean that all other personal experiences are wrong or right.

We can only find truth in Jesus who claimed to be the truth. We need to step back from our own viewpoint and gaze on Jesus in all of His splendour.

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, Jesus, that You came to earth as the answer for those searching for the truth. Give us strength to not give up on the search for You. Help me by Your Holy Spirit to change my reality to one that aligns with Yours.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
