Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Deuteronomy 13:1-5. Since the “sinners prayer” can not be found anywhere in the Bible, what is the qualification for classifying oneself as a “Christian”?

“If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a sign or wonder, and if the sign or wonder spoken of takes place, and the prophet says, “Let us follow other gods” (gods you have not known) “and let us worship them,” you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The Lord your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul.

It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him. That prophet or dreamer must be put to death for inciting rebellion against the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery. That prophet or dreamer tried to turn you from the way the Lord your God commanded you to follow. You must purge the evil from among you.”

Following Jesus and the law.

In speaking to my spouse the other day, the question came up, “What does it take to be a true Christian?” We had heard from someone who continued to sin privately until it blew up publicly. The person spoke about how happy they were when the news became public. Finally, they could take a deep breath with fewer burdens weighing them down.

This person was consumed by the perception of sin. Having grown up in a Christian home, they were all too familiar with the law of God. However, they were also all too familiar with the shame that was heaped on those that slipped up. Rather than confronting the shame and consequences they chose to continue sinning in the darkness.

The consistent cycle of the Bible points to the grace of God allowing us to come to the lows of life. At this point, we confess and repent from our self-serving sins.

Let us follow the laws and commands of our Father. Not only for the blessings that are consequences, but to reflect His love back toward Him!

Let’s Pray

Dear Father,

I acknowledge that Your laws and commands were given to us for our good. Following them not only protects me but brings glory to You. Help me to live according to Your word today.

In Jesus’ Name,
