Daily Devotional – Praise Throws Off the Chains

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Acts 16:23-28. Where do you find yourself after a long hard day? Are you sunken with your head in your hands, questioning whether God truly loves you and why He would allow you to experience a day that?

“After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. 24 When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.

25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. 27 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”

God works miracles when we focus on Him.

Paul and Silas had just been flogged, beaten, and thrown into jail. That would measure pretty high on my level of bad days. However, I think Paul and Silas would have been happy to face the Roman guards, as they had wrestled them away from the mob that wanted to kill them.

After experiencing the attacks and hatred, rather than wallowing away in self-pity, Paul and Silas sang praises toward heaven. They chose to not look at their situation and circumstances but looked at the faithful and unchanging God who created it all.

As they looked upon Jesus their savior, they could not help themselves. They started to sing praises and worship the Almighty! What God did was miraculous, and He broke the chains that held Paul and Silas. God is able to break the chains in our lives, so let us look toward heaven in praise!

Let’s Pray

Dear Father,

Today I want to take my eyes off of my circumstances and what ahead. I choose to look toward You and praise You, for only You are worthy of the attention and worship. Break chains and burdens today by You Holy Spirit as I lift Your Holy Name!

In Jesus Name,

Amen
