Daily Devotional – There Was Nothing Left

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Exodus 10:22-26. God had stripped Egypt of everything. There was nothing left for God to take from Egypt. They would never be the powerful national that they had been!

So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and total darkness covered all Egypt for three days. 23 No one could see anyone else or move about for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived.

24 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, “Go, worship the Lord. Even your women and children may go with you; only leave your flocks and herds behind.”

25 But Moses said, “You must allow us to have sacrifices and burnt offerings to present to the Lord our God. 26 Our livestock too must go with us; not a hoof is to be left behind. We have to use some of them in worshiping the Lord our God, and until we get there we will not know what we are to use to worship the Lord.”

Darkness is absence

At school, my art teacher told us that black is not a color. Rather it is an absence of color. In the same way, darkness is nothing more than a void of light. Darkness is the absence of God and Jesus in the presence. The light of Jesus would come to shine upon the earth, and we would follow His light. Then take His light into the world that was void of His presence.

Egypt was left with nothing and the darkness was a symbol of their lack. In a wealthy nation that had it all, the people had never known what it was to not have need. Living in the USA, for a great part, most people are not aware of what it means to have a need.

Many of us would attest to a darkening country without God. The darkening nation is not because of many more people getting what they want, rather it is the sign of a greater void of God. Egypt was dark because it was void of God and now it was void of all the distractions that gave the Egyptians comfort.

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, God, that You are the light of the world. You have called us to take You into the corners of the globe, so that You could remove the darkness and shine for those people. Help me to live Your life set before me and be the light in the world I live in.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
