Daily Devotional – New Year – Old Habits

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Exodus 32: 1-6. This time of the year is always filled with the new things we are going to take on. Although not much has changed since yesterday, in our minds we have set out the ambition to make a change.

“When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods[a] who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”

Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods,[b] Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”

When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival to the Lord.” So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offering”

How much do we really change though? We are all so encouraged by the individuals that lose 100+ Lbs of weight, but how many people who have 100+ Lbs to lose do so. The percentages are very small!

This is not meant to be a pessimistic message!

God had taken the Israelites out of Egypt, but He had not managed to get Egypt out of them. How quickly they resorted back to their old ways. We like to think that we would not make the same decisions after having just witnessed the 10 plagues.

Bad habits and practices die hard. However, many people have overcome addiction to alcohol, drugs, and other things by the grace of God. We need to remember that we are fighting more than flesh here! Bring God along for the fight and be the overcomer He created you to be!

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, Jesus, that You have overcome all things. Forgive me for always trying to do things on my own and in my own strength. Please come alongside me and give me Your grace, strength, and deliverance. Help me to achieve what you have called me to!

In Jesus name
Amen
