Daily Devotional – Love Perseveres in Hope

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from 1 Corinthians 13: 1-13. Happy Valentine’s Day! As the world celebrates love and affection for one another, we think about the one who gave us love! God is love and because He has loved us, we can love others!

If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Recently I was talking to my kids about persevering in love toward others. We live in a broken world where everyone is looking out for themselves and how they can get that which they believe is due to them. In this world where everyone is taking, you can become very despondent about loving people.

In the same way that God reached through from the super-natural world into the natural world as a baby boy, we need to persevere. We need to know that people are going to look to take advantage of us, and need to be prepared for it. When the signs of a particular behavior pop up, we need to hold firm to our boundaries. Although we are wise with our resources and emotions, we can still pursue others in love.

We all want to be loved, we all want to be valued and when we feel the love we will change. However, those around us have been terribly hurt and burnt by the world. They have put up tremendously high and strong walls. They take time to be removed, and this is why we need to persevere. Perhaps the person that you trying to love doesn’t feel worthy of love and they push it away. Not because you have done anything wrong, but because you need to hold firm to loving them!

Tell those that you love, just how important they are. That you will love and cherish them for who they are created to be. Tell them that your day would not be the same without them and their presence!

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, God, that You have loved me. You have done so much because of Your love for us. Give me Your strength and guidance to persevere in love. You have given me the hope that You will do Your part as I continue to pursue others for You!
