Daily Devotional – Love is Not Envious

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Ecclesiastes 4: 1-6. Can love and envy co-exist? Is it possible to say in one breath that you love someone while conspiring about what you are envious of?

Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun:

I saw the tears of the oppressed—
    and they have no comforter;
power was on the side of their oppressors—
    and they have no comforter.
And I declared that the dead,
    who had already died,
are happier than the living,
    who are still alive.
But better than both
is the one who has never been born,
who has not seen the evil
that is done under the sun.

And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Fools fold their hands
    and ruin themselves.
Better one handful with tranquillity
    than two handfuls with toil
    and chasing after the wind.

Envy can not go hand in hand with love. Love calls for you to look toward the other person and give them what is best for them. To bless them with what you may want, but what you know is best for your friend. Giving of yourself to someone else can not have you holding back for yourself. You can not give leftovers and scraps to one that you love.

Even earthly fathers know how to give what is best for their children. Parents will so easily give up their fantasies so that their children do not lack anything.

Being envious of what others have, points to us looking at the wrong things and person. Being envious of someone else is not caused by you looking at others, and wanting what they have. Envy comes from looking at ourselves and saying what we don’t have. The opposite of this is love, where we look at others and see what they need!

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you that You have first loved us. You first looked towards us and saw that we needed your salvation. Help us to focus our eyes on others, and to see what they need so that we can give them love!

In Jesus’ name, Amen
