Daily Devotional – Joy Overflowing My Circumstance

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from John 15: 5-11. God desires that we experience a life lived out with overflowing joy and peace. The scripture today, Jesus said that He told His disciples what He did. “So that they would have joy!”

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

I find it interesting how Jesus said that He wants His joy to be in us. Not our joy! Jesus doesn’t want us to muster up enough courage to have joy. He doesn’t want us to place blinkers on our eyes in order to ignorantly be joyful. It is not our might, nor our power that creates joy in our lives. It is the joy of Jesus.

So how do we get Jesus’ joy in our lives? Look back a few verses where he said that we are to abide in God as branches abide by a tree! I’m struck by the simple reality that God has called us to communion with Him. He has not called us to a step by step process, or to a club containing rules of membership. From the beginning, God created us for a relationship, a relationship with Him.

Have you ever noticed how your friends rub off on you? Spend a lot of time with them and you soon you start sounding the same. The more time that we spend with Jesus, the more He can rub off on us! The more that we abide in Him, the more of His joy will overflow in our lives.

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

I know that you have called me to abide in You. I am sorry for the many things I place ahead of You and the opportunity to spend time with You. Starting today, I will protect my time with You, because I need Your joy in my life. The people in my world need Your joy!

In Jesus’ name, Amen
