Household problems

When you are a homeowner, you will encounter all kinds of different problems to deal with. Many of these problems you can easily solve yourself while there are others which are best left to the professionals. It is important that you know how to manage a few of the more common household problems so that they do not turn into larger issues and so that you can keep the household running smoothly at all times. With this in mind, here are a few common household problems and how you can solve them – there are sure to be a few familiar ones here!

Mold & Mildew

Mold and mildew is a very common household problem and one which needs to be taken care of. This is because it can lead to water damage and it is also not good for your health if left unattended.

You will need to find the cause of the mold and/or mildew, and this is usually down to a ventilation issue or a water leak. You then either need to make changes to increase ventilation, change where you dry your clothes or get the leak fixed by a professional. There are then sprays that you can use to safely remove mold from your home.

Blocked Toilet

A blocked toilet is an incredibly common yet embarrassing problem, and it is important that you know what to do so that the issue can be quickly resolved and you don’t make matters worse.

A plunger is usually up to the task (always have one before you need one) but you could also use a plumbing snake or chemicals. Never flush more than once, turn off the water supply and call out a plumber if you are still having issues.

Infestations

Infestations will not only make you uncomfortable in your own home, but they can lead to major property damage and potential health issues, particularly when you have a rodent infestation.

Infestations are usually best left to the professionals so that you can be completely sure that the issue is taken care of and so that the source is found and removed. Attic cleaning services can get rid of rodent and other infestations to provide complete peace of mind.

Clogged Drains

Clogged drains or slow draining sinks are highly frustrating and can be off-putting. Fortunately, there is usually a relatively easy solution which does not normally require calling out a professional plumber.

Boiling water should be the first solution that you try but failing this you can normally solve the problem with baking soda followed by a mixture of vinegar and hot water – this creates a reaction which usually solves the issue. If there is something that has got stuck down the drain, then you might need to use a wire with a hook on the end to fish out the blockage.

Noisy Washing Machine

If your washing machine causes a horrible racket and even moves across the floor during a spin cycle, then it can be incredibly frustrating and could even cause damage.

This is a relatively simple fix which involves leveling the machine by screwing the front legs up or downs until the machine is flat (use a spirit level) and then tighten the locking nut on each leg.

Hopefully, these solutions will help you to quickly solve a household problem the next time one occurs, which usually isn’t too long. Often you can fix the problem yourself, but it is also important that you recognize when it is best to enlist the services of a professional who can take care of the problem for you and make the home a safe place.
