Daily Devotional – Jonah Was Sent to Warn

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Jonah 3:1-9. God’s word is filled with examples of God calling out to His people to come back to Him. Our sin convinces us that we are strong enough to stand on our own with our own abilities.

Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”

Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh:

“By the decree of the king and his nobles:

Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.”

Jonah didn’t love his neighbors

When God came with the word of destruction for Ninevah, Jonah gleefully looked over at his neighbors. He was going to live to see the hand of God get retribution for those that did not live according to the laws and commands of the Almighty.

While Jonah did not want to see his neighbors acknowledge and seek forgiveness, God desired that His creation would respond to Him and draw nearer. At some point in life we were like the people of Ninevah. We sought our own benefits and glory.

The word is clear, God is calling us toward Him. In the same way that Jonah went to Ninevah, I come to you today. Repent, turn toward God and seek His face and Kingdom above anything else!

Let’s Pray

Dear Father,

Thank you Father that You have called me and created the way for me to draw nearer. Forgive me for all my selfish and sinful ways. I repent and ask that You give me the wisdom to live according to Your word each day.

In Jesus’s Name,
Amen
