Daily Devotional – The Itch That Just Won’t Stop

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Exodus 9:8-12. That feeling when you just have to scratch. Often as a wound heals, the healing skin begins to become itchy. Driving us crazy until we give in to the need to relieve the itch.

Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Take handfuls of soot from a furnace and have Moses toss it into the air in the presence of Pharaoh. It will become fine dust over the whole land of Egypt, and festering boils will break out on people and animals throughout the land.”

10 So they took soot from a furnace and stood before Pharaoh. Moses tossed it into the air, and festering boils broke out on people and animals. 11 The magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils that were on them and on all the Egyptians. 12 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart and he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said to Moses.

The boils drove the Egyptians crazy

Pharaoh continued to harden his heart in defiance of the Almighty. In his mind, there was none higher and greater than he. This narcissistic approach can sometimes be found in people around us today. They may not be the leader of the world, but they seem to believe that you ought to be grateful for their presence.

God next served Pharaoh and his people with the most personally impactful plague. The boils covered the bodies of the Egyptians. They could not stand before Moses and Aaron. They most probably had the most burning itch all the time.

It was now becoming personal. This plague was the first plague that truly attached itself to the Egyptian people. God the healer of all could so easily remove the plague and heal the people of Egypt. Their arrogance stood in their way. God has always seen to and saved the meek and humble, but those who don’t see that they need God, push Him away no matter what.

Let’s Pray
