Daily Devotional – His Love Pierced Him

daily devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Psalm 22:12-21. Jesus has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took the curse for our wrongdoing onto Himself.

“Many bulls surround me;
    strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
13 Roaring lions that tear their prey
    open their mouths wide against me.
14 I am poured out like water,
    and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart has turned to wax;
    it has melted within me.
15 My mouth[d] is dried up like a potsherd,
    and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
    you lay me in the dust of death.

16 Dogs surround me,
    a pack of villains encircles me;
    they pierce[e] my hands and my feet.
17 All my bones are on display;
    people stare and gloat over me.
18 They divide my clothes among them
    and cast lots for my garment.

fall scents for your home

19 But you, Lord, do not be far from me.
    You are my strength; come quickly to help me.
20 Deliver me from the sword,
    my precious life from the power of the dogs.
21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;
    save me from the horns of the wild oxen.”

Jesus was pierced for our transgressions

The punishment for all the transgressions of generation upon generation landed on the shoulders of Jesus. Each blow was taken on our behalf, and the last blow pierced his side. Before that, His hands and feet were pierced with our sins snd covered by the flowing blood.

It was not the nails that held Him there as His body bled out and failed, it was His love and desire to see redemption. Like a helpless lamb before wolves, Jesus laid down His life as our sacrifice.

Jesus suffered pain and humiliation so that we can confidently approach our Father. He had nails and a spear pierces His flesh so that we may live a life of freedom. Let us remember this as we approach the throne of God with reverence and thankfulness.

Let’s Pray

Dear Father,

Thank you that Jesus took the blows and piercings that are so rightfully mine. I can not comprehend Your love but come before You with songs of joy and thanksgiving today.

In Jesus’s Name,

Amen
