Daily Devotional – Higher Thoughts

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Isaiah 55: 6-11. Most of us who have sat in a couple of church services have heard this scripture quoted. Sometimes we know by face value that God’s ways and thoughts are greater. Do we truly grasp the full breadth of the fact that God and His ways are higher?

“6 Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, 11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

God is referencing His forgiveness and mercy when he goes on to inform Isaiah of His ways. In churches today, it is often a common judgment as to who has truly received salvation. The debate rages on about whether a person can “backslide” or if they were ever true believers.

In Isaiah God states that His ways, thoughts, mercy, and forgiveness are something greater than we can comprehend. Matthew 7: 3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” Jesus was yet again elaborating how we judge each other’s salvation.

We are not told to understand God’s mercy for each other, or God’s salvation. We are instructed to love each other though. Let’s be better at loving each other today!

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Help me to take my eyes off everyone else and fix them on You. I forget all that lies behind and beside me and run this race that You have laid out before me. I look to you, grateful that your ways are higher than ours. Your higher ways give me the grace and mercy that I do not deserve. Thank you!

In Jesus’ name,

Amen
