Daily Devotional – Dancing for Joy

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Galatians 5: 19-26. What is joy? Joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, which is most greatly experienced in the heart of those willing to surrender all self-sufficiency: self-promotion, self-reliance, self-protection, and self-absorption: it is a gift given.  Joy means to be glad, to rejoice, with the connotation which implies to dance for joy, or to spin around with pleasure.

19 “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.”

Can’t you just visualize little children playing together on a playground? If you happen to be there, you would most likely see the purest form of laughter and glee: little girls holding hands and spinning as fast as they can in a circle. I want you to imagine a day like that in your own life, perhaps when you were just a little child. Think back. Can you remember a day like that?

When my children were small we would go to Disney World and Logan and Taylor would love to find those waterspouts that were synchronized to music and jump on them before they were about to blow. I remember loving to watch them giggle over something so simple. With all the rides, the attractions, the plays, the shows that we would attend, it was that time playing in the waterspouts that was one of the highlights of our yearly visit to the park.

I believe this is how we are to live our life. I believe we are to live each and every day as if it were our last, embracing the small things that life has to offer. How would your life be different? Would your days be filled with worry, anxiety, or fear or would they be filled with peace, and love and laughter?

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Please fill me with abundant joy. Help me grow in joy and teach me to walk in it each and every day. May I never take for granted, the good that you have done in my life and may I always remember that every day is a gift from you that I should enjoy.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
