Daily Devotional – The Church is More Than Their Title

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from John 15:1-8. The bride that Jesus is coming to get for Himself, is not merely those labeled the bride. Jesus intimately knows His bride and they abide in Him.

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.”

Being saved is more than just a label

Following God and being His disciple is more than a box you check on a form. It is more than the type of religious building that you attend once a week. Being part of God’s church requires that we are attached and anchored to God. It does not matter which building you attend each week or whether you attend a building at all. Being saved is SO much more.

Jesus said that we need to “remain in Him and He will remain in us!” Jesus is 100% committed to us! He isn’t playing games but is playing for keeps. If we are not 100% committed and bearing the fruit of His Spirit, then we will be pruned from God’s church.

You may continue to attend a building and make various claims to man, but God will have cut you off from His vine. If we are abiding in God, God will bring about His fruit. In the same way that the vine bears fruit, you connected to God can but only bear His fruit. Let us not be caught up in the things and titles of this world. Rather let us focus our attention on being connected to God through Jesus our savior.

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, God, that You have made the way for me. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus, I can be bonded to Your vine and church. As I focus on You, bring about Your fruit throughout my life. Bring glory to Yourself through me as I become more like Jesus each day.

In Jesus Name,
