Daily Devotional – Breakthrough!

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from 2 Samuel 5:17-21. Using a military analogy, “Breakthrough” is an offensive thrust that penetrates a defensive line of an enemy and pushes beyond that line to ultimate victory.

“When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went down to the stronghold. 18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim; 19 so David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?”

The Lord answered him, “Go, for I will surely deliver the Philistines into your hands.”

20 So David went to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, the Lord has broken out against my enemies before me.” So that place was called Baal Perazim.[a] 21 The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them off.”

There is an enemy who holds a defensive line to block you from pushing through to receive your victory; an enemy who wants to keep you in bondage to something in your life. It might be a fear of failure. It might be an addiction or a sin in which you are entangled. It might be anxiety or depression. Whatever your block is, God is ready to remove that block.

Imagine the Green Bay Packers defensive line. Now imagine breaking through their line.  That line is your struggle. It might seem impossible but remember, with God all things are possible.

At times, there are circumstances engineered by the enemy, which have us hemmed in.  We don’t know quite what to do. How do we move beyond those barriers that Satan has placed in our way? How do we overcome these issues of life?

Old Testament examples are meant to teach us spiritual principles. One such lesson is that that battles in the natural are examples of overcoming battles in the spiritual. They foreshadow the victory you and I are supposed to walk in as believers. Our victory is in Christ Jesus. He has empowered us to be overcomers. You can do this!

Foundational to every battle, it is imperative that you understand and remember these four things.

  • The devil comes to kill steal and destroy.
  • God is the Master of breakthroughs.
  • You have an Advocate ready and willing to fight for your needs.
  • God wants you to be victorious, and He is ready, willing and able to help you.

David understood this. David, the mighty warrior of God, understood where his victory would be established: in the hands of the Master of breakthroughs. This was clearly reinforced to David in the name of the battle site, Baal-perazim, which literally means the “Master of Breakthroughs.”

Your victory is just ahead of you. Pray. Confess your weaknesses to God. Trust that He will fight this battle on your behalf. You have the victory. It’s yours to take.

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you that you are the God of breakthroughs. Today, I choose to give you my struggle. I choose to confess my weakness in this area. I choose to submit it under your authority. Please help me. Please fight this battle on my behalf. Please help me breakthrough.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
