Attracting young adults

A common bugaboo for churches all over the world is attracting and retaining young people. Without an infusion of and if you do not attract young adults, no church will last into the future. To increase engagement and attendance, it pays to bring your church into the modern way of doing things.

It starts with having the right marketing and then backing it up with running a church that people want to stay a part of. Luckily, in this day and age, it is easier than ever to attract the right audience. Similarly to attracting customers to a product, service or business if it is done correctly, attracting younger congregants to a church is achieved by understanding your target.

With some of these tips put into place, your church will be booming in no time.

The right messenger

It is one thing to have the right message for your church, but it is another to present the message in a way that resonates with the ideal candidate you are trying to attract. What I mean by this is that you need to have your message on point in a way that a young adult will respond, but also presented in the right way.

A very effective way to do this is to have faith-based t-shirts made. The message should be easy to remember and the artwork should be something that a young adult will appreciate. These shirts can be given away or even sold for extra revenue, but you should have your younger congregation members wearing them at every opportunity where there will be others in their age bracket.

The messaging should be consistent across a number of different platforms.

Use social media

It’s no secret that many young adults are using social media quite often. There are so many platforms, however, that it may be hard to reach the right person if you aren’t using it effectively. Find the social media channel where they are using and then find the best way to post on that to get the right attention.

Instagram is an obvious one as young people don’t use Facebook so much lately. Make sure to be using video as well as good quality photos. It bears repeating that all of the messaging should stay consistent, as well. Whatever the branding or slogan was for the shirts and apparel, it should be the same on the social media that you use.

Hit the media

Have a press release that can be blasted to media outlets anytime your church is holding a charity event or fundraiser to let the community at large know what your church is about. It can be a lot of work to do this so either has a dedicated office for marketing and PR or hire a PR firm to take care of this for you. There is a good ROI on any money spent on hiring a firm as it will serve your objective to attract a younger congregation.

It may seem like an uphill battle to attract young people as many are leaving the church, but it needn’t be that way. Find out what is important to any potential young members. If they are looking for more community service or simply a community spirit with like-minded young adults, then cater your ministry to that.
