Over 50s rate themselves healthier than 25-34 year olds

QUASHING TRADITIONAL PERCEPTIONS: Turning 50 no longer means that you’ve passed your prime in terms of health and fitness, with research commissioned by over 50s insurer Apia, showing Australia’s over 50s are fighting fit and loving life.

The national study found that 60% of Australia’s over 50s are exercising at least twice a week, and placing a high priority on keeping the body feeling just as young and healthy as the mind.

Executive Manager of Apia, Geoff Keogh said “Growing older doesn’t mean growing inactive. Exercise routines can be modified to accommodate injuries and different life stages, so there are ways to stay active, no matter what your age – and it seems our over 50s are putting some younger Australians to shame.”

The Apia study reveals that 46% of over 50s are most likely to rate their health an 8, 9 or 10 on a scale of 1 – 10, in comparison to only 33% of 25 – 34 year olds – showing a positive perception of both their minds and bodies.

Though I’m not the competitive type, playing tennis has allowed me to form friendships that will last forever. I never thought that exercising could have such a positive impact on my entire life, I’m very thankful for that.”

Staying active is not the only thing top of mind for Chrissie, she has also dedicated hours of her time to help her tennis club thrive. Chrissie’s stellar efforts and complete devotion to her club were recognised by awarding her with life membership.

“Helping others has always been something that I’ve loved doing. It’s been an absolute privilege to play a part in the success of my tennis club since joining 46 years ago”

She not only competes in social, inter-town tennis and seniors  tournaments, but also works tirelessly around the club. “I have deep roots within the club. My Mum is still a patron and life member at 88 years old,” she said.

“Tennis has played a huge part in my life. I love the laughs I have on the court and owe my good health to being happy in life. I’ve been told numerous times that I do not look my age and that I’m a ‘brick wall’ because I love a good rally.”

“Its stories like Chrissie’s that show that there really is no such thing as being ‘too old’ to stay fit and healthy – and make positive changes for your future,” Mr Keogh said.

“Our research further goes to prove that keeping active and healthy is top of mind for Australia’s over 50s.”
