7 Ways to Stay Young – Inside and Out

Growing old is not something we can avoid. It creeps up on us, no matter how healthy our diet is or how much anti-aging skin replenishing cream we slap on every night. However, while we cannot turn back the sands of time, we can slow them down a little. There are many ways to stay active in later life, so if you are not ready to throw in the towel, here are some tips for keeping your brain and body young and vibrant.

1. Take Some Classes

Learning new things is good for the brain. Research has shown that challenging the brain by taking classes can prevent cognitive decline. There are many ways to continue with education. You could study for a Masters of Public Health at your local university or take a creative writing degree online. Either way, the course you take will be good for you in more ways than one.

2. Learn a Musical Instrument

Music is good for the mind and soul. You may have learnt to play an instrument in your youth, but if not, now is a good time to learn how to make beautiful music. It does not matter what instrument you play, it will have a positive effect. So choose an instrument and take some lessons. It’s great therapy!

3. Exercise Regularly

We all know exercise is good for us, but do you take enough? There are lots of classes you can try, including aqua aerobics, yoga, Pilates or Spin. Even moderate exercise is helpful, so instead of taking the car everywhere, try walking instead. Alternatively, go for a swim – it is kind on the joints, but still good exercise.

4. Play Mind Games

Games help keep the synapses firing smoothly in the brain. Crossword puzzles and Sudoku are great for cognitive development. A crossword a day really does keep the doctor away. You can even play puzzles online these days, so fire up the iPad and text your skills.

5. Be Sociable

Our social circle often shrinks, as we get older. Friends move away and we don’t replace them. Broadening your social circle is good for the mind and body. Instead of sitting at home on your days off, volunteer for a local charity or take part in a class. You will soon be making new friends.

6. Travel

Travel forces us to deal with unfamiliar situations and puts us out of our comfort zone. This gives the brain a terrific workout, so it is good on many levels. Travel is also a lot of fun, so book a trip somewhere new and enjoy.

7. Learn a New Language

Learning a new language forces the brain to create new neural pathways. Languages are challenging, but it is good to feel challenged, and once you can speak a few phrases, you can test your skills abroad!

Don’t let growing old slow you down. Life is for living, so try new things and enjoy yourself!
