Four manageable steps to a better execution of your business ideas

By Beate Chelette –

Isn’t it the truth that we have these great ideas but somehow they get lost in the shuffle? As time goes by, these great ideas wane from our consciousness and soon they are forgotten. But let’s look a little deeper into how you can actualize those ideas.

The Nike slogan “Just Do It” sums it up for most of us. Don’t you wish you could just do that all the time? Why is it that we tend to postpone our goals and get sidetracked? How good is your brilliant idea if you can’t just do it?

Let’s dive in and break it down in four manageable steps: First, comes the idea phase, second is the evaluation of the idea, followed by the planning stage, and finally, execution of the idea.

* Step 1. As you drive, read, talk, listen and meet with people, you hear a lot of information. Evaluate everything you hear with two questions in mind. How can I use this for my business? Is this something that could help me? If so, write it down.

* Step 2.  Schedule a designated time in your calendar as your idea evaluation time. My personal tip is to have a number of email drafts open so I can continue to jot down my ideas or notes. During your idea evaluation time, review your notes and examine if the idea is a) good and doable, b) good but the time is not right or c) not the right time or idea, and then cross it off your list.

* Step 3.  If the idea falls into category a or b, pull out your calendar, iPhone or Blackberry. Calculate how much time you need to execute your idea and break down the time frames for each phase of the project.

* Step 4:  Execute the idea. This is the most challenging step for most people. So what is the trick? Here is my secret. I don’t ever think about if I “feel” up to it. I sit down, eliminate my distractions, and then I do it. I don’t get up until I’ve completed the first draft. No fixing tea, coffee or a bite to eat. I don’t answer emails—I stay focused on the task at hand. After the first draft, if you’re like me, you have to walk away and let it sit before you do a revision. Or you may know instantly that it’s as good as it’s going to be. You are the judge of that.

To sum up, to move your business forward, you need to become the best and most effective executor of your ideas that you can be. It doesn’t matter if it is an event, a marketing campaign, or a cold calling initiative. Write it in the calendar and plan it out. Focus on one big idea at a time and then “just do it.”

  1. Execute the idea! Oh, sure! And if you could still start a hot dog stand for $100 dollars, like the founder of a certain fast food chain tried to tell his trainees just last year when his franchises now cost over $100,000 — I’d love to execute all my great ideas! It’s easy. After all, Debbie Fields started her cookie chain for…oh, I think I read that her husband lent her $50,000. Even to start a web business that can have lots of pages and unlimited reach, like Twitter, I’d need (and I’ve researched this) to pay a webmaster/technical genius a flat fee of $10,000 or hourly fee of $250 for setup and then an hourly salary because I’m not a tech geek. Yep — I’m gonna execute my great ideas tomorrow!!

    1. Dear Sandi- I sympathize with you because I know it’s not as easy as it use to be to launch/start a business. The reality is you do need a certain amount of resources, an income source, or savings, and a basic plan. But what I will say is that when we want something bad enough, we have the vision and passion, and we’re willing to work very hard and reach out to others that have gone before us for counsel, all things are possible. There are many stories of successful people who started with nothing that became very successful and wealthy. Sometimes you have to be really creative as is the case with launching LivingBetterat50.com. I had to seek reasonably priced vendors, do a lot of the work my self until I could afford to contract with vendors, hire interns, recruit family & friends, take out credit line, use savings, apply for grants, etc. I keep persevering because I have a clear vision, which gives me the drive and energy to work harder than most people I know, and the wisdom to seek advice & support from others that are willing to share their learnings & knowledge & to continuly ask God for direction and strength. Cast your vision and meditate on it until it’s crystal clear, then write out a plan and begin to take steps towards that vision, one step, one day, at a time!

  2. Dear Sandi,
Good thing your passion is on fire. Now imagine if you can channel that passion into building your own business. Just as people back then build their dreams on what now is little money, in the future people will look at us and tell us that we were lucky and they have it hard.
Bottom line is: if you have a dream you either pursue it or you keep finding reasons why you can’t.
As for your internet idea. As a matter of fact you can do it for much, much cheaper. There is a lot of free WordPress training info available on the internet. Local community classes offer courses for as little as $60. And many of these are at night. I took community business classes through the Small Business Administration because I knew nothing about business.
The key to executing your ideas is to overcome your frustration and make the first step. And I think you got enough passion to make it happen.
