Are you looking for a fun way to spend some time with your grandchildren? If so, why not take them on a family boating trip? There’s nothing like spending quality time in nature with your loved ones as you coast along the open waters. You’ll get to reconnect with nature and each other as you indulge in experiences you won’t soon forget. That is, of course, as long as you keep these tips in mind.

Choosing a Destination

Whether you’ve decided to make it a family vacation or you’re only going to be gone for a day, where you choose to set sail is essential. Small lakes and ponds might be ideal for an adult fishing trip, but the grandkids might need a bit more excitement. Chartering a boat along a shoreline, harbor, or bay, for example, is a great idea. Such destinations not only have a breath-taking view, but there are often other activities to try. You could rent a boat for a few hours, then rent jet skis, go scuba diving, or head to a nearby restaurant for a bite to eat.

Select the Right Boat

Once you’ve decided where you’re going to start your boating excursion, you’ll need to rent a boat. As there are different types of boats, there are a few things you want to consider. For starters, what is the purpose of the boating trip? If you’re going fishing, you’d like a large enough boat to comfortably accommodate you, your family members, and your fishing equipment. However, if you’re on vacation and want to rent a boat for a few hours for sightseeing, then you might check into boat rental companies like SD Adventures.

Sun Protection and First Aid

You’re going to be outdoors for quite a few hours on your boating trip. Make sure that you not only pack but wear adequate sun protection. Everyone should apply sunscreen before getting on the boat and also wear protective gear like hats and sunglasses. You can also check to see if the boat you rented has a canopy for extra coverage.

Sunburns aren’t the only thing that could go wrong on your boating trip. Should you or one of your grandkids get injured, you want to be able to administer first aid right away. Fortunately, there are travel-size kits you can bring along just in case something goes wrong.

Life Jackets

Whether you and your grandkids are excellent swimmers or not, you should have adequate protection. Should someone fall overboard, you want to ensure that they’re safe until help arrives. Properly fitting life jackets are your best line of defense. You can also pack extra floating devices for peace of mind.

Snacks and Beverages

No family outing is fun without the proper nourishment and hydration. If you’re going to be on the boat for a while, you must pack snacks and beverages. Something as simple as turkey and cheese sandwiches and juice boxes or crackers, fresh fruit, and cheese will do the trick. The idea is to make sure no one has to spend hours on an empty stomach. Another way to immerse your grandkids when you hit land is to teach them about nature, you can even educate them and feed them simultaneously by foraging for edible flowers

Extra Clothes and Towels

You may not be planning on doing any swimming while you’re on the boating trip with your grandkids, but this doesn’t mean you won’t get wet. From the waves knocking against the side of a speedboat to the flipping and flopping of a freshly-caught fish, you never know what could ruin your clothes. As no one likes the idea of squishing around or waiting to air dry, it’s probably best that you have a change of clothes and extra towels in your arsenal.

The summer might be over, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some quality time with your grandkids. A family boat trip is a lot of fun. Once you’ve made sure to complete the steps mentioned above, all that’s left to do is pack your bags and get ready for an experience you’ll cherish forever.
