Cookbook Review

I have been following and cooking from the Taste of Home recipe for years. I have stacks of back issue magazines and several cookbooks that I return to time after time for well loved recipes that have now become family favorites.

Taste of Home is now celebrating 20 years of ‘Good Recipes and Great Stories’.

Aroma By 1 Give 1

What I love so much about Taste of Home is that we celebrate the folks who make each recipe come to life”. Catherine Cassidy – Editor in Chief, Taste of Home

Taste of Home has always been to me like getting my best girlfriend’s family recipes, grandma’s recipes, mother’s recipes and the ‘church lady’s’ recipes. These are the recipes that frankly, remind you of home – the fragrance of pie in the oven, roast chicken, chocolate chip cookies and homemade soup. All of these and much more can be found in this voluminous cookbook that contains 1,485 of the favorite recipes over these past few years. Several of these recipes are marked ‘Top 100’.

The index  is set alphabetically beginning with appetizers to soups.

You have chapters dedicated to ‘Grand Prize Winners’, “Our Contributor’s Meals’, ‘Mom made it Best’, ‘Mealtime Express’ and much more.

Thoughtfully organized, this wonderful cookbook contains fabulouos pictures, special notes, stories, the year the recipe was contributed, as well as several indexes so that you might easily find that just right recipe for your family’s dinner, picnic, or party.

I believe this cookbook could be a fabulous gift for a newlywed, for a birthday gift and/or for a holiday gift. It is a wonderful gift to give yourself and to your family.

After thumbing through all the recipes I decided to try the Peach Cream Pie recipe.

Recently, our dear friend Carolyn at Aiken House and Garden made her version of Peach Crumble Pie that I was going to try. I had just brought back a large basket full of gorgeous peaches from my sister and brother-in-law’s market at the Pee Dee State Farmer’s Market in Florence, SC. You can find Lawhon Produce on Facebook.

I came away with the most amazing peaches, sweet potatoes (I will share Grandma’s Sweet Potato Casserole recipe soon), fresh peas, sharp Cheddar Cheese, Cane Syrup, Watermelon and my daughter’s favorite – boiled peanuts. They make the best!

My husband kept asking what I was going to make with the peaches – we’ve been eating them at a fast pace. So, today, I made the Taste of Home Peaches and Cream Pie – it is slightly different from Carolyn’s pie. I think Dearest will truly love this!

3.  Pour filling into the crust. Bake at 400 for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350; bake for 20 minutes.

The Taste of Home Best Loved Recipes is slated to be one of my all-time favorite go to cookbooks! As Catherine Cassidy stated, “what makes this book so special. It’s not just great recipes, and not just award-winning recipes. These are our best loved recipes. The ones that conjure up heavenly aromas, that bring you back to Sunday dinner tables, summer picnics, and holiday parties, that call vividly to mind the special cooks who made them. The ones that make you close your eyes, smile and say, ‘Mmmm!'”
