A New Spin to My Trip

By Peggy Lester –

The roads were maintained relatively good, but there were pot holes frequently along the road. The speed limit is also several miles higher than ours in the States. I think riding on these roads was one of the biggest “faith building experiences” of this trip. We did arrive in Okpo, Kogi State, safe and sound and extremely “prayed up”!

This was my second trip to Nigeria. We would be speaking at the large conference where more than 12,000 people would gather for a week of preaching and singing services on top of a hill, under an arbor. The meetings were great and we saw God do many wonderful things.

After concluding our stay and ministry, which was fantastic and life-changing for me, we left Okpo on a rainy morning returning to Enugu to fly back to Lagos. It was the beginning of the rainy season and due to the lack of rain for months, the roads were slippery because of oil spills from the vehicles. We were about fifteen minutes from Enugu. Our driver Moses and our new acquaintance Samson, my friend Charlotte and I, had just finished singing some praise choruses to the Lord. I was taking a drink of water to quench my thirst when Moses, hit a pot hole in the road and water splashed all over me. He became apologetic and turned to speak to me sitting in the back seat. As I was looking straight ahead, I saw him veer to the left edge of the road. I saw immediately the high shoulder as we hit it and he cut back quickly on the road. We began swerving and then went into a spin, two complete circles and then landed off the road backwards, but safely stopped. During the event, it was as if we were in slow motion. My friend Charlotte and I were calling “loudly” on Jesus for help and protection. Samson was sitting calmly and quietly beside me. Moses had done an outstanding job of controlling the vehicle. When we came to a stop, several young men, our “angels” on assignment, stopped to help. They pushed us back on the road and we were again on our way to the airport.

What an experience this was…we had truly experienced the Presence of the Lord with us in and around the car. Shortly, after we were back on the road, Samson looks over at me and said matter-of-factly, “Well, I guess that puts a new spin to your trip!” We all had to agree with him. We counted our blessings when we discussed what could have gone wrong but didn’t. We serve a “Mighty Big God who is always by our side!” He was truly there with us that day and “kept us during our little spin”!

“Have you had a “major spin” in your life that has thrown you for a “spin” or a “loop” so to speak?” If so, you can be assured the Lord was not far from you because He promises in His Word He will never leave us nor forsake us. During this little spin, my life did flash quickly before my mind and but I was at peace in my spirit even though I was experiencing an event in the flesh! How about you in “your spin”; are you at peace?”
